Substitute Teacher Certification Now Faster & Easier
With a severe need for substitute teachers across the state of Missouri, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved a new process for the certification of substitute teachers. Individuals wishing to become substitute teachers will be allowed to take a 20-hour DESE-approved online course. The 20-hour online course covers topics such as professionalism, honoring diversity, engaging students, foundational classroom management techniques, basic instructional strategies, supporting students with special needs and working with at-risk youth. This online course is being offered for those wishing to become substitute teachers but cannot meet the current requirement of 60 semester hours or more of college-level credit from a DESE-recognized and accredited college or university.

Former or retired teaches who still hold valid Missouri teaching certificates no longer have to obtain a substitute teaching certification. You can learn more at the DESE website here.
